A bit of drama tonight
2nd entry tonight: We just returned from dinner at a place called Lucky's where my conventions group took me to lunch today. After dinner, around 6.45 pm (we were going to adjurn to Kilkenny's across the street for a drink), we spotted a bottle shop next door. We went in for Adrian to buy the Samuel Adams beer he had had on Sunday. There were 3 guys there; youngish perhaps about 20+; 2 white guys and 1 black guy. They were standing around the beer displays, and looking at the hard liquor on the shelves but not really looking like they were going to buy. I asked the Proprietor (he looked like Liberace) if he had Samuel Adams. Yes, he said, right there. But his gaze was on the 3, and he stayed behind his counter. He was quite a big guy, with a leather jacket.
We too thought it was a bit funny that they 3 just kept looking at the liquor but were not asking prices or anything. The Proprietor was distracted when we were asking prices; and then after about 5 (long) minutes, the guys left the glass-fronted shop to stand outside. Proprietor said to us; I am going to lock the door. and he walked to the front door and locked it. (I think he should have an auto lock at his counter!) He said to us that he has owned this shop for 27 years and was able to protect it. 3 guys started looking in - they were not aggressive or anything; we think they wanted grab some liquor and run. anyway, Blondie knocked on door to be let in. Proprietor ignores them and keeps talking to us. He asked if we were from India, because he has always wanted to travel to India. He then sailed into George Bush and asked our opinion. the 3 then decided to leave in their car. Gosh, what could have happened, if there was gun fire ?
Just then, another guy knocked on the door to be let in. He ignored the guy as well but let him in when we left. He made the call to our hotel for us, to get them to come fetch us ("I have this couple here who need a ride back to your hotel, Ma'am").
We hope the 3 don't ever go back to harm him. But he was not scared; just very watchful. Our first experience of not-very-nice Tulsans.
